Understanding sporting organisations before trying to change them.

Most sporting organisations never chose the system they now run on. It was built by accident — one decision at a time, under pressure, by people who came and went. But it still produces exactly the results you're seeing, whether anyone intended it or not. The Wortmann Methodology exists to understand that system before recommending change.

Does this sound familiar?

The meeting ends. Everyone agrees something has to change.

The discussion moves to coaching. Then leadership. Then culture. Then communication.

Six months later —

The organisation has changed.
The results haven't.

Perhaps you recognise your organisation.

"We've invested heavily but performance hasn't improved."
"Our departments work hard but rarely together."
"Our player pathway doesn't consistently produce the athletes we expected."
"We collect more data than ever, yet decisions still rely on opinion."
"Our strategy looks excellent on paper."
"But everyday practice tells a different story."

The Wortmann Methodology

An organisation is never finished. It's shaped continuously — by decisions made under pressure, by who stays and who leaves, by habits nobody chose on purpose.

Coaching, medical, analytics, recruitment, leadership, operations — each department can be excellent on its own. Performance depends on whether they're being shaped by the same hands.

A sporting organisation seen as one complete structure — the pitch above ground, everything that sustains it built beneath.

We don't tell your specialists how to do their jobs. We ask whether their efforts are connected to the same organisation.

The method starts with evidence, not opinion. We look at what your organisation says about itself, what actually happens inside it day to day, and what it actually produces — then we go wherever those three don't agree. That gap is the diagnosis.

Where the evidence supports a fix, we recommend one. Where it doesn't yet, we say so, rather than manufacturing an answer to look complete.

What This Is — and Isn't

We diagnose the organisation behind the sport — not the league, not the federation, the company running it.

This is not a rating system. We don't score leagues or governing bodies, and we don't publish rankings of who is "legitimate." Most frameworks measure an organisation against an external standard. This one starts from the organisation's own stated purpose and tests whether it actually delivers it.

We work privately, inside one organisation at a time, for the people accountable for how it functions.

Who I Work With

The owner who bought the organisation

The owner who bought the organisation, and is starting to notice the departments have never really spoken to each other.

The Sporting Director caught in the middle

The Sporting Director caught in the middle — recruitment wants one thing, finance blocks it, coaching is the last to hear either way.

The Chief Executive running more than one club

The Chief Executive running more than one club, trying to work out whether the group is one organisation or just several sharing a badge.

The Board member who can sense something is wrong

The Board member who can sense something is wrong, long before anyone can put a name to it.

What I Actually Do

I don't begin with solutions. I begin by understanding how your organisation functions. Only then does meaningful change become possible.

About Rudolf Wortmann

For more than three decades I have worked inside sporting organisations. One observation has remained constant. Performance is never created by a single coach, department or initiative. It emerges from the interaction of the whole organisation. The Wortmann Methodology was developed to make those interactions visible.
